Scalp Micropigmentation
Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP for short, is a semi-permanent specialized tattoo technique meant to replicate the look of a hair follicle. A fine needle and special pigments are used to create the appearance of hair follicles to increase the look of hair density on a bald or thinning scalp. Pointillist technique, or tiny dots, are applied as a shallow grade tattoo that creates a shadow of a hair follicle. It is the illusion of hair through dots. This added color then can create the look of density of the hair. SMP will camouflage the area with bare scalp and blend color into the existing hair growth.
This is a game changer for anyone with thinning hair. SMP can help lower a higher than desired hairline, fill in the thinning temple area and along bare part lines. Yes you can use other treatments for hair loss, topical and oral. These complementary techniques can work well together but it is important to disclose use of these products to your practitioner as some may need to stop temporarily around your session to not compromise healing of the SMP.
Since the pigments used for SMP soften over time, as your hair naturally lightens. The appearance for the ‘follicles” will provide added dimension to your existing hair. If you already have light hair, we will select the most suitable color and then patch test colors as needed to ensure the most natural results.
This treatment usually takes approximately 2-4 sessions, with sessions scheduled a few weeks apart to allow healing between appointments. Sessions are generally 2-4 hours in length. The exact number of sessions will be determined by each person’s hair loss, skin type and desired outcome.
Some will have more discomfort if there is previous scarring. Most clients feel it ranges at a 3 out of 10. Numbing products can be used to increase your comfort.
